Certified seed training strengthens technical knowledge in the agricultural sector

Certified seed training strengthened the capacities of farmers from Búzi and Chibabava through an intensive training organised by ESMABAMA under the Sustainable Rural Development Project, funded by Sei So Frei OÖ.

Realized by CF Consultoria e Serviços from 21 to 23 April 2026, the training equipped farmers, agricultural technicians and agriculture students with practical and technical knowledge on seed multiplication, processing, storage and certification. The training aims to strengthen food security and promote sustainable agricultural production in rural communities. As a result, participating farmers will be better prepared to become local producers and suppliers of certified seed, reducing their dependence on intermediaries.

The training also brought together lecturers from agricultural colleges alongside farmers, technicians and students. This created an opportunity to exchange traditional knowledge with technical and scientific approaches to certified seed production.

Combining theory and practice

Theory-and-practice

Over the training, participants gained knowledge of seed production and multiplication techniques, quality standards, certification requirements, legal documentation, risk management and the operation of the national seed system. They also explored the seed value chain, market strategies and business planning.

The practical component included group exercises, field visits to the production plots of the Estaquinha Agricultural Institute, and hands-on activities covering production area planning, identification of type plants and seed field organisation.

Creating new opportunities

The training is expected to improve production levels and product quality while strengthening producers’ technical skills, including the preparation of maize and common bean seed production fields in Estaquinha. It marks an important step towards enabling subsistence farmers to become more productive, organised and economically sustainable producers.
