Some Mozambique education statistics about the general context in Mozambique:

Rural Sofala districts - Mozambique education system

Búzi district has 103 EPC's (Complete Primary Schools, which teach from 1st to 7th grade) and 5 Secondary Schools (which teach from 8th to 12th grade);

Chibabava district has 92 EPC's and 5 Secondary Schools;

Machanga district has 44 EPCs and 2 Secondary Schools;

Regarding secondary education, the distance from home to school is very large. Furthermore, the costs for attending Secondary Education are unaffordable for most families - costs for books, transport, registration and enrolment (Education Strategic Plan 2020-2029, MINEDH, 2020).

Illiteracy rate in Mozambique: 39%. It increases to 50.7% if we consider the same rate in rural areas (Census 2017, INE);

Illiteracy rate for women in Mozambique: 49.4%; increasing to 62.4% if we consider women in rural areas (INE, 2017).

Number of children out of school - education Mozambique

38.6% of children in Mozambique between the ages of 6 and 17 are out of school (INE, 2017);

Regarding children aged 6 years old, in 2007, 63.6% were out of school, but this figure rose to 73% in 2017. Likewise, in 2007 41.5% of 7-year-olds were out of school, the figure rose to 65.6% in 2017 (Census 2017, INE);

Pre school education in Mozambique

In Mozambique, it is estimated that only about 101,259 children have access to Pre-School education, corresponding to only 3.5% children aged between 3 and 5 years (in a universe of 2.9 million children);

Most Pre-Schools in Mozambique are private or community-based. Only 1,552 children have access to Public Pre-School;

A considerable proportion of poor families, located in rural areas, cannot afford the costs to access Pre-School Education. These children enter primary schools at a disadvantage.

Early marriage and early pregnancy in Mozambique – Mozambique education statistics

56% of women aged 20-24 in rural areas were married before the legal age (18 years) and 36% of the same age group in urban areas (Early Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy in Mozambique, UNICEF, 2015);

94% of girls enroll in Primary Education, but more than half drop out before completing grade 5. The main causes are early pregnancy and early marriage (Education Strategic Plan 2020-2029, MINEDH, 2020).
