HIV, vertical HIV transmission, HIV antiretroviral treatment

In 2021, Mozambique registered 35,463 HIV/ AIDS related deaths;

There were 94,053 new HIV/ AIDS infections in 2021;

It is estimated that in 2021, 2,101,222 Mozambicans were living with HIV/AIDS, of which 1,253,516 were women;

12% vertical HIV transmission registered in 2021;

The retention rate at 66 days of the population on HIV antiretroviral treatment in 2021 was 87%, and 91% if we consider Sofala Province;

98,192 registered cases of tuberculosis in Mozambique in 2021;

12,227 notified cases of tuberculosis in Sofala Province in 2021. Sofala was the province that notified the most cases, 484 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Malaria in Mozambique statistics: Mozambique registered a total of 10,607,422 reported cases of malaria in 2021. In Sofala Province, the total number of notified malaria cases was 1,072,163, the fourth Province with the highest number of cases;

The compulsory notification diseases with the most cases in 2021 were malaria, febrile syndrome (2,081,418 cases), diarrhea (514,136) and dysentery (88,486 cases);

Around 2,000 total deaths caused by COVID-19 from the start of the pandemic until the end of 2021 (MISAU 2021);

Malnutrition Mozambique: chronic malnutrition affects 38% of children under 5 in Mozambique; 16.5% of cases are severe malnutrition (INE 2021).

Importance of water sanitation and hygiene - mozambique health

Only 48.7% of households have access to safe water;

37% of households have access to a traditional unimproved latrine, 23.4% have no latrine;

46% of households burn their household waste, 23% bury it, 19% dispose of it on waste ground, 7.6% is collected by authorities.
