Tomato production resulting from the implementation of greenhouses
Sustainable agriculture is reshaping the lives of farmers in Mangunde, Barada, and Estaquinha. Through the Sustainable Rural Development Project, funded by Sei So Frei OÖ, 5 modern agricultural greenhouses were installed: 2 in Barada, 1 in Estaquinha, and 2 in Mangunde benefiting around 150 people, including members of agricultural associations and individual farmers.
“With the greenhouses and irrigation systems, we can now grow vegetables all year round,” says a representative of one of the beneficiary associations. “This allows us to ensure continuous production and improve our livelihoods.”
Growing Vegetables, Growing Opportunities

Vegetable in greenhouses
The greenhouses already yield tangible results. Associations and individual farmers have started producing cabbage, onions, peppers, and lettuce, marking the beginning of a more productive agricultural campaign. The facilities also enhance food security, provide a stable source of income, and strengthen local markets.
A main objective of the project is not only to support production but also to make farming profitable. To achieve this, the associations are closely supported by agronomy technicians and a dedicated agribusiness technician, who provide technical guidance and market-oriented advice.
Sustainable agriculture: Agricultural Fair Sparks Local Economy In the field of sustainable agriculture, on 5 August, the project hosted an agricultural fair in Mangunde, bringing together two associations, Kuchinga and Hama ye Nhara. At the fair, they sold cereals, including maize and sesame, as well as a variety of vegetables.
The results were impressive:
Mr. Manecas Manhoca, representing the Provincial Services of Economic Activities of Chibabava, attended the fair and praised the initiative: “This is an excellent initiative that stimulates the local economy and provides real opportunities for our communities.”
Towards Self-Sustaining Communities

The project’s impact goes far beyond immediate production. By providing year-round cultivation capabilities, technical support, and market access, the initiative empowers communities to achieve long-term food security, income generation, and sustainability.
Farmers are already seeing the benefits: improved yields, access to markets, and stronger associations that work together to support each member. The ESMABAMA team is proud to see the tangible results of this investment, reflecting how strategic support and training can transform rural livelihoods.
Between Achievements and Challenges

These results reflect the commitment and dedication of the entire team involved in the project. However, significant challenges remain, such as transporting agricultural produce to the points of sale, which is hindered by the poor condition of access roads. In the specific case of the associations in Mangunde, crossing the Búzi River is required, making the process even more complex. At present, transportation is supported by the project and, in Mangunde, a boat provided by one of ESMABAMA’s previous projects is being used.
