Kukumuka: the new brand for agricultural cooperatives
| |
Kukumuka is the new collective brand representing the agricultural cooperatives of Barada, Estaquinha and Mangunde in Sofala, created through a participatory process with local farmers. Developed under the Sustainable Rural Development Project implemented by ESMABAMA with support from Sei So Frei OÖ, the brand strengthens the identity, visibility and market recognition of cooperative products. More than a name, Kukumuka symbolises growth, quality and shared prosperity, helping farmers add value to their produce, expand market opportunities and promote sustainable rural development.

ESMABAMA, through the Sustainable Rural Development Project funded by Sei So Frei OÖ, organised a certified seed training that strengthened the technical capacities of farmers, agricultural technicians and students from Búzi and Chibabava. Combining theory with hands-on field experience, as a result, participating farmers will be better prepared to become local producers and suppliers of certified seed, reducing their dependence on intermediaries.

The revitalisation of the school risk and disaster management committee at Mapangara Primary School marked an important step towards strengthening climate resilience in Machanga District. The training was initiative of Pestalozzi Children's Foundation as part of the ‘Let’s Learn’ project. Pupils, teachers and community members enhanced their preparedness for climate-related emergencies and contributed to creating a safer and more resilient school environment. Machanga is one of the districts most vulnerable to climate change.

With the support of the Associazione degli Amici del Mozambico (AMO), ESMABAMA is bringing about change in communities by improving access to healthcare, supporting education and responding to humanitarian emergencies. ESMABAMA provided emergency humanitarian assistance to 139 families affected by the floods in the village of Mutambanhe, Machanga district, Sofala province, through the Restart Project, funded by Missio Austria. The intervention involved the distribution of food, agricultural and shelter kits to help families recover from the devastating floods. Despite the significant logistical challenges involved in reaching this remote community, the initiative reflects ESMABAMA’s commitment to restoring the dignity, resilience and hope of vulnerable populations.
