Our Success and Resilience

Pietro-and-Cumbe-in-ESMABAMA ‌

, We are delighted to bring you the latest edition of our newsletter, sharing recent progress and activities at ESMABAMA. You’ll find articles celebrating our 30th anniversary, updates from our recent donor visits, insights into regional food security challenges, COHEMO Project - Highlights, and the impact of our child-centered teaching methodology. We hope you enjoy reading about the work your support has made possible.

A significant milestone in the recent months has been the ongoing institutional audit of ESMABAMA. Completing this audit is a crucial step that will enable us to pursue new project opportunities and attract additional donors and investors to uplifting the communities across southern Sofala. For us, the audit is more than just a financial review, it is our commitment to transparency, social responsibility, and best practices in management.

We also want to address the current situation in Mozambique following the recent presidential election. The country has been facing a challenging period over the past month, with reports of strikes, protests, injuries, and loss of life. During October and November, restrictions on internet access and communications, along with periodic power outages, have disrupted daily routines. On certain days, safety concerns have required us to remain at home. While the Sofala Province has generally remained stable, unrest has been reported in some districts, such as Buzi, where ESMABAMA operates, since the 4th of December. We continue to monitor the situation closely, which currently shows little sign of a resolution in the near future.

In these uncertain times, your support is more vital than ever, enabling us to continue serving rural communities with resilience and hope.

As the year comes to a close, we extend our warmest wishes for a joyful festive season and a bright, successful New Year.

Warm Regards,
Pietro Ferlito, ESMABAMA General Director.

30 Years of Dedication to Communities

img 30 years-esmabama ‌

On August 2024, we celebrated 30 years of commitment to the most vulnerable communities in southern Sofala Province. The event, held at “Hotel Moçambique” in Beira, brought together key figures from the provincial government, the city council, the archbishop of Beira, as well as organizations, partners, collaborators, and associates. The event highlighted the successes and challenges of the three main areas: education, health and agriculture.

Our work is only possible with the support of our partners. We were delighted to welcome some of them to our office and missions throughout the year. These visits not only deepened our partnerships but also reaffirmed our shared commitment to promoting the well-being of our communities, overcoming challenges and building a better future for all.

Uncertain Futures: Food Insecurity...

community image ‌

"The communities have nothing to eat. For those who rely on agriculture and rain to survive, hunger becomes inevitable when the climate doesn’t cooperate. Blessed, or at least lucky, is the one who can secure even one meal a day, and even luckier if that meal is more than just mango purée,” Alerts José Zacarias, director of the Mangunde Health Centre. This is how people are surviving in rural areas. Due to food insecurity, even Christmas is compromised... The current situation highlights growing malnutrition cases.

Student-centred methodology

new-top-ed ‌

The student-centred teaching method focuses on the active involvement of the student in the learning process. In this model, the student is the main agent of their development, while the teacher acts as a facilitator or mediator. The approach values participation, critical thinking and the construction of knowledge. This methodology is being implemented by  ESMABAMA in rural areas with funding from the Pestalozzi Children Foundation.
