Visits from partners

In the last quarter of 2023, we were honoured to host representatives from our esteemed partners: Caritas Austria (Daniela Pamminger, in the photo), HORIZONT3000 (Thomas Vogel, Elisabeth Moder, Jan Wiesenmüller, and Sabine Serlinger), Pestalozzi Foundation (Ariana Lins, Daniel Schwitter, Isménia do Rosário). Additionally, we welcomed Wolfgang Heindl from Sei So Frei Salzburg for their first visit.

Organizational strengthening

event_office_missions ‌

ESMABAMA has been actively investing in strengthening its organizational capacity and communications. Our recent initiatives include internal organizational events, a revamped organisational chart, updated administrative procedures, supported by CEI, and gender training sessions, the latter supported by projects COHEMO and RECOMOSA, projects implemented in partnership with Caritas Austria and funded by ADA.

Fire at Estaquinha's Boarding School

estaquinha_fire ‌

Last week, we were taken by surprise when a fire broke out in one of the blocks of the boarding school. The quick response from the guards and teachers, armed with water buckets, prevented the fire from spreading to other blocks. However, the ceiling of the affected block was completely destroyed. Now, with the rainy season upon us, there is a growing concern that the damage may worsen.
Fortunately, since the students were still on holiday, the worst was avoided. The Mozambican school year begins on the 1st of February, and our primary concern now is the rebuilding of this damaged block. We appreciate any support or assistance during this challenging time.

Cholera outbreaks and Health activists

activists_sensitization ‌

Cholera outbreaks have been registered in the neighbouring countries and within Mozambique itself. The most affected Provinces are Nampula, Cabo Delgado, Tete, Zambézia, and Sofala with over 10.400 cases reported by the Ministry of Health. As of now, no cases have been reported in our regions of activity. Nonetheless, health activists, supported by Caritas Germany and project COHEMO (backed by Caritas Austria), have been conducting crucial sensitization campaigns among rural communities.

Cyclone season and Agriculture challenges

Mozambique is currently in the cyclone and rainy season. Irregular rainfall, influenced by the El Niño phenomenon, has impacted the first season of cereal harvesting. ESMABAMA’s technicians are advising communities on resilient agriculture practices, for the upcoming second harvesting season.
