Dear ESMABAMA's donors, friends, and sympathisers,

We are excited to share the second edition of our newsletter, which contains updates on our activities in education (pre-school and literacy), health (fight against Gender Based Violence, GBV, and general ongoing works), and agriculture (drought resulting from the El Niño phenomenon). This newsletter reflects the status of some of our initiatives, highlighting both the challenges we face and the solutions we have implemented with the support of our partners.
I would like to take this opportunity to provide context about the situation of books in our libraries. We have 6 libraries in our 4 missions, 4 in the general schools, and 2 in the Institutes. However, our biggest challenge is acquiring up-to-date technical and school books, as the ones we currently have are from previous editions. The lack of suitable books negatively affects our students' progress. Many are forced to resort to internet research, but the low income in rural areas limits access to the internet, which is both deficient and expensive.
The articles in this newsletter provide an opportunity to inform you in detail about some of our activities. Due to Privacy Policies, we invite you to share this newsletter with your contacts and encourage them to subscribe for more information about our actions.
I express my sincere gratitude to everyone who supports us. Best regards to you all and good reading, Pietro Ferlito, ESMABAMA Director

Gender-Based Violence in rural area

Gender-based violence is a reality all over the world. ESMABAMA is working hard to combat this practice in rural areas. We work with health professionals, health activists, field officers and psychologists to help minimise practices of GBV. In this article you'll read the impactful testimonies of some women... Healthcare in remote areas...

Many people in rural areas do not have access to basic health services. Health centres are located far away. With the support of our partners, we are supporting the health centres in Estaquinha, Barada and Mangunde with medicines, equipment and infrastructure, as well as carrying out mobile brigades for people in the most remote communities.

El Niño's effects on our missions

The El Niño phenomenon is causing many difficulties for the families in Estaquinha, Barada, Mangunde, Machanga and the surrounding communities, due to the extreme drought that is already compromising their food security. In many communities the drought and hunger became a common problem. In this article, you'll read about ESMABAMA's challenges and efforts to help the people in our missions.

Education without borders in rural areas

“Where there are classrooms, there's less chance of classes being paralysed. When it rained for a week, that meant a week without classes, something that has changed with the construction. When people see the building, they feel happy and hopeful and show more interest in attending the literacy centre.” Said Alberto Chiquanjo, coordinator and literacy teacher at the AEA of ESMABAMA in Mangunde. ”I have students who learned to read and write at the literacy centre, and today they already have a profession and I feel very happy about that”, added the coordinator.
In the regions where we work, there are communities where the only contact they have with a school are the literacy centres managed by ESMABAMA with support from Sei So Frei OÖ. See more about this in this article.

ESMABAMA's pre-school intervention

Pre-school education is still a big challenge in Mozambique. Only 3.5% of children have access to education. The situation is even more delicate in rural areas. That's why, with the support of SOPRO ONGD, we have implemented pre-school education in our 4 missions. Read this article and understand the current situation in Mozambique and ESMABAMA'S work to contribute to the education of children in order to prepare them to enter primary school.
